Twenty-nine years ago on an August scorching afternoon in Stratford, Oklahoma my husband and I exchanged wedding vows. We were gathered by seven of our closest friends standing beside us in the church of Christ.
The audience was full of my parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins and close family friends that had driven over 5 hours to be there to support me. Along with my family lots of my husband’s family and friends filled the burnt orange pews and smiled as the ceremony began.
The ceremony went off without a hitch and we proceeded to the fellowship building for the classic white wedding cake, punch, mints and mixed nuts. I wore a short sleeved Cinderella style wedding dress that had a full tulle skirt and the top was heavily beaded. All of that to say it was a very hot dress and I was glistening, to say it politely.
As I greeted guests and thanked them for being at our wedding at the reception, I continued to have a layer of sweat, to say it bluntly. Our exit from the reception “plan” consisted of everyone lining both sides of the door, throwing confetti beautifully into the air and it would catch the sunlight as it cascaded down to make this picture perfect moment to be photographed to preserve for all time. Then we were to be swept away in an old classic red and white 1957 Chevy, as we drove away into the sunset.
As everyone lined up and took their positions for our exit, my husband and I grabbed hands to start our walk towards the old car. Instead of the confetti being tossed ever so thoughtfully into the air, it was aimed right at us by the handfuls. And instead of the confetti cascading gently down and us walking through it like a beautiful fallen snow, people threw it like a snowball straight at us. It literally stuck to my sweaty skin like glue! Every inch of bare sweaty skin that was not covered by my wedding dress was caked with confetti. For all you soon to be couples, don’t have your guests throw confetti, but you can cover yourself this month with all the fun things to do in Hochatown!
